It's Propaganda time!

Everyone does it at sometime or another! Check out posters put out by the Chinese from the 50's to the 90's in this online gallery. Some pretty interesting stuff! Socially as well as artistically.

True story, during my film history class in CEGEP, we were watching Triumph of the Will (most elaborate piece of nazi propaganda EVER!) as well as some Canadian war time films (also arguably propaganda) ones of my friends leaned over to me and whispered 'Whats propaganda?" Needless to say we weren't really friends after that

Sad news coming out today. Geraldine Doyle, the inspiration for Rosie the Riveter has died. Poster child for the war time American Women movement, encouraging women to leave the home and begin working in factories, she was just 17 years old when artist J Howard Miller took her photograph wearing a red polka dot bandanna and leaning over a machine. The "We can do it" motto and poster have since become a iconic image for women's workers rights and feminism in general.

The lovely folks over @ io9 posted this juicy tibit!

All this makes me think of is fringe and that David Cronenberg episode of Alias where he doses everybody and eats fakeon.

I can't decide what the best part is, the retro credits, the retro ads, or the subject matter itself.

20 TV Sci-Fi Gamechangers

20 TV Sci-Fi Gamechangers

great list over @ SFX about big ga.e changers in show, personal favorite like BTVS, Fringe, X-Files and Start Trek Next Gen are in there. Good mix of game changers for better and for worse.

I keep seeing references to Blakes 7... I really need to get on that!

TV Goodness

Close Encounters of the Murderous Kind

Best episode of Castle since "Undercover Lover" X-Files themes, and references and a giant Firefly reference! Sigh, I love Nathan Fillion

All of this really makes me wanna go out and buy the complete series of the X-Files and watch it all again.

Gossip

So word on the street is that they're converting the entire Star Wars Saga into blu-ray for sale at Christmas and into 3D for a theatrical re release. I'd like that think that I'm above going to the theaters to see this, because of my dislike for 3D conversions, but who am I kidding? The chance to see Star Wars in theaters is just to great to pass up... I may have to get drunk to make it through Phantom Menace though.

We Are Coming... Back

TV retrospective: Torchwoods series 3, 5 part miniseries

Still one of the greatest miniseries of all time. I'm still astounded by the sheer amazingness and magnitude of Torchwood's "Children of Earth" Miniseries.

After the end of the second series I swore I would never watch it again, when I say major character death, I mean MAJOR!. It's like Davis wanted to end the show. Then children of earth came alone, and it almost felt like the end, like it would wrap things up nicely. And what do we get, a 5 part mini series that rivals Battlestars action and gravitas, and suddenly I'm more into Torchwood then I have ever been and am on the edge of my seat. And then 5 seconds later I'm hating Davis again and marvelling at the balls this guys has to be killing off his characters in the manner that he does.

For a series/ miniseries that at first started out as a budget saving effort and looked like the end, Davis really made the most out of the shortend season and made into the biggest most intense movie I have ever seen.

The problem with COE is that it leaves Torchwood in a sort of limbo story wise, and with the American version coming up (or not) I am anxious to see how it turns out.

Throwback!

Who shot this and on what?! no seriously!

I rediscovered this video the other day when SM and I did a late 90's early 00's video night.

I used to love EVE6 (Fun fact the band was named after a character on X-files, no wonder I loved them so much) and this vid reminds me why. If I ever do a vid it's totally gonna rip this one off. The vintage toys the dynamic camera movement's the lighting and xtreme close ups, the cut off bodies and faces, just all totally work for me. I wonder if he actually wore the camera on a harness (how would it turn like that) or what, but I love it. I'm a sucker for the self reflexiveness of it all. This is one of those instances where the video makes me like the song more then I did when I first heard it.

+ bonus points cause the lead singers a redder

Greatest Influences

Had to do this for one of my classes, thought I'd share.

1. STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE - Watching this at 13 years old my first thought was "I want to be a Jedi". My second thought was "I want to be the person who made this and who made me want to be a jedi"
2. BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER (TV) - This show came to me at a time of transition in my life and it changed me. It also introduced me to my second greatest influence Joss Whedon.
3. The Matrix - Epic, crazy use of Christian and Gnostic myths, awesome VFX.
4. Dogfight - The only romantic drama I like. Made me relate so heavily to the main character. Still makes me cry.
5. The Breakfast Club - First film I saw to rely so heavily on characters and dialogue.
6. Juno - I wish I was this funny all the time.
7. Firefly (TV) - Favorite television show of all time. SPACE WESTERN enough said...
8. Alias (TV) - First television show I watched religiously
9. M*A*S*H - The best of comedic television.
10. Rent - Changed my mind about musicals and the 80's. seeing it on Broadway reinforced this.
